  17. <p>    When LeeMah DataCom Security wanted to demonstrate the
  18. impregnability of its computer safeguard, the company decided
  19. to lay down a dare. The California firm, which provides
  20. equipment to protect mainframes against interlopers, challenged
  21. U.S. computer hackers to crack its code during a weeklong
  22. contest. In messages sent to electronic bulletin boards
  23. frequently used by hackers, LeeMah promised that any successful
  24. code breaker would win a trip for two to St. Moritz or Tahiti.
  25. More than 7,000 phone calls came into LeeMah from dozens of
  26. hackers trying to beat the system, but none were able to
  27. retrieve the hidden message in the computer. The odds against
  28. them, estimated LeeMah: 720 quadrillion to 1.
